Where it joins fee Ottawa, the Ridcau river has a sudden drop of 37 feet creating a very beautiful falls, known as Rideau Falls. To get a shot like this the photographer often has to be on early riser for but a slight breeze is enough to shake the ice off tree branches and spoil the effect.

In 1828, just before the little settlement was renamed Bytown. WINTER WONDERLAND: The cold season, when a new fall of snow or a sleet storm can transform the landscape in a matter of hours, offers more variety for picture taking than ony other period of year. This photograph was taken on Mount Royai on a clear, bright morning the township of Nepean contained two stores, one stone building, thse square timber houses and a few log cabins. With the cominH of Lieut-Colonel- By to build the canal the settlement increased hi two years time to 150 houses and two large three-story stone stores. Three military barracks and hospital were built on what is now known as Parliament Hill.

Immediately after the War of Independence in the United States, Contact Printing Negatives the Canadian Colony had to soilve the problem of defence along the St. Lawrence, the natural border line for many miles between the two countries. English military authorities drew up plane to be submitted to English Government in 1790, but it was not until iy LANGIVIN COTi These have i self-rimmlng (which i waterproof without Have, indercoating Steel sinks are now available with an undercoatmg. similar to the undercoating on your car for winter driving, only in the ease of the sink, it's soundproofing. After you've removed the old top, you'll discover that the sheathing or underlay of quarter inch plywood, masonite or hardboard is (a) too wet and rotted to re-use (b) has such a heavy coat of old adhesive that it cannot be cleaned for a fresh coat of adhesive or the sink hole is too big to accommodate the new sink.

Kitchen sinks and counter tops are usually 24 inches wide that means half a sheet of quarter-inch plywood, nailed over the old piece, or in place of it, if you remove the old top. If your sink top is made with one-inch lumber, or plywood you will still need this quarter-inch sheet nailed over the old surface. contact cement for plastic laminate adheres best to clean, dry plywood. Deck Tapa Difficult Tf your taps come out of the back wall, instead of being the deck type, that sits on the coun-tertop at "the back of the basin, you're lucky, because it's much easier this way- All you have to worry about is cutting out the hole for the sink.

With deck type faucets you have to accurate when cutting out the hole for the hot water tap, the cold water tap, and the middle supply pipe, not to mention still another hole for a dishwasher brush, if the faucets include one. the War oj 1812 that Britain became thoroughly alarmed at its weak position in America. The close proximity of Montreal and the St Lawrgnce provided easy access to the interior of Canada and produced a situation where the Americana could easily cut the line of communication and stop the conwnercial traffic between the tmx to the cupboards, men fit and Install this before the counter or sink top. In any case, the most important thing is to remember there are TWO thicknesses of plastic laminate; a wall grade and a table tor counter' grade, and TWO different types of cement or "adhesive. With only two thicknesses and two cements to choose from you would think the task would be simple, but each glue and grade has such vastly different characteristics that you cannot use the wrong cement with the right grade of laminate and do a successful job.

The thin, table grade plastic laminate can only be applied with a contact cement. As it's name implies, this cement sticks immediately upon contact. It cannot be slid or moved or pushed, even a tiny fraction. Aim Accurately This means that after you've given the plywood and the plastic a coat of the contact cement, and let it dry in a warm room for about 10 to 15 minutes, your aim has to be accurate when placing the laminate on the plywood. If you miss the hole for the taps by even a 18th you're in trouble.

You can avoid some of this trouble by using a slip sheet, a piece of brown wrapping paper big enough to cover the coated plywood. Place the plastic on top of the paper the contact cement will, not stick to the paper, only to the plywood, which has also been coated with contact adhesive. When you're satisfied the plastic is in place, slide or slip the brown paper slip sheet from under the plastic pressing the plastic into the plywood as the sheet Is Upper and Lower Canada. May Be Difficult Normally the. average home mechanic never gets around to re-covering the kitchen sink top unless, or until, the old top is so badly stained, warped, twisted and roiled it has to be done. If you have an old, rolled rim or porcelain kitchen sink you've pot trouble, unless you are a first-class carpenter or cabinetmaker.

The average handyman, with his limited skill and tools, cannot fit closely enough to make a waterproof job. If jf cm Mie has persuaded you to chop off the old ceramic tile sink top or Hp off the battleship-linoleum top, in favor of the newer, easier-to-ciean plastic laminate top, you can solve your plumbing and carpentering problems in one stroke by discarding the old sink and instal ca and to study the posmtole use of the Rideau River as second route to Ottawa and the interior of Canada. Frmm 1815 to 1828, these problems were explored, and studied. Land was acquired fur iro. posed canals avoid the rapids and fall of tha Rideau and Ottawa Rivers, the fost satisfactory route was found between Lake Ontario and the Ottawa River.

Several routes were propesed and studied but the one using the Rideau River was finally chfxsen, and land was purchased at the junction of the two rivers for the entrance to the Canal. About April 21, 1826, John By of the Royal Engineers was appointed by the English Government to direct the building of the Canal. Between March and September, 1827, three companies of soldiers arrived at Bytown and the work on the Canal begun. iiie uuiiuiiig 01 me iirst eignx iocks was a cuiikuu leat in engineering, but a lasting as they are still in use today though no longer of l-moortance to the present great City of Ottawa as a Historical monument and a tourist attraction. After the locks were first completed in 1832 and as the work on the canal progressed, Colonel By noted the important location of Bytown as a place of defence.

Land was purchased from Nicholas Sparks and fortifications were built on a large area between Upper necessary but it offers 1 cleaner and smoother surface for the paper. I stick the empty negative holder in the enlarger and close down the lens to about 1. 1 1, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the density of the negatives to be contact printed. Exposure varies from five to about 10 seconds, depending on the negative and on the grade of paper. If you have negatives on the ism roll much denser or much thinner than tha others you can use pieces of cardboard as ahieldi to allow more or less exposure, It's simple as that And it's handy too, especially if you have relatives and friends hounding you to see your last shots you haven't had time to enlarge.

Some contact sheets will usually keep them quiet, for a time anyway, A MOST SURPRISED PERSON, so he said, was John Finn, who took the photograph used in this column last week. Mr. Finn, an engineering student at McGill, didn't know his entry in the National Newspaper Snapshot Contest had survived to the final local judging stage of the contest. The point is that it was taken' with the simplest of inexpensive box cameras. The photographer didn't even have a tripod and had to hold the camera against a tree far what he thought would be the correct exposure 30 seconds (with Super H11 judgment proved correct.

Time and time again good 'shots are taken With simple equipment, proving that the key, to success is not so much in the. machine as In the person who uses It. The is to know what the equipment can do and use it for shots within its scope. Mr. Finn's camera would not have taken a person walking by.

But it was quite adequate to handle a still scene, THE CENTRAL CAMERA CLUB will hold its annual general meetinz Tuesday at 8 p.m. at 1441 Drummond St. "Election and installation of officers will take place. 1 THE MONTREAL CAMERA CLUB has scheduled a color slide night for Monday evening at club quarters. 1340 St, Catherine St West, and its basic photography count for Wednesday, when Marcel Garand will discuss portrait lighting.

In this column last Saturday we mentioned how the beginning of a new year was a good time to start a numbering system for negatives. This brings in also the problem of indexing negatives. You may start out very diligently by marking down, for each shot, details of date, settings, etc. These be in a note-book or on the negative envelopes themselves. But to locate a negative quickly you will find visual about the only satisfactory way, especially if; you have a large number to go through and, -like many other photographers, became lazy and kept jotting down briefer and briefer descriptions until you now have just the negative number and maybe the date for reference! -v I have found contact printing an excellent and fast alternative to a strip-by-strip hunt through heaps of negatives when I want to print an old shot I started the system some months ago and have managed since to do all negatives for 1956.

It's now a matter of keeping up to date as I go and. one of these days, of going back to 1955 and previous years to do those negatives too. Whole Roll At Once, The idea is to contact the whole roll on 1 sheet of 8 bf 10 enlarging paper and mark the roll number, date and other particulars on the 'back of the sheet. When you're looking for a shot -you just leaf through the 8 by 10 "sheets and pick it out there rather than have to go through the negatives roll by roll, strip by strip. When you get organized to contact print" a whole lot at one time you shouldn't average much more than five minutes a roll for 120 or 620 film, a bit more maybe for 35mm.

No special equipment is needed except one or two sheets of window pane glass. 'I stick one plate of glass (10 inches square) down on the enlarger base with tape across the four corners. If your printing paper is quite flat you just need to put it on top of the emulsion side- up, line up the negative strips on it and cover them up another plate of glass the same size, If the paper curls at the edges stick tape across the corners (you "can leave' the tape on, pull -the corners of the sheet of printing paper out and slip another one in for. the next roll), The bottom piece of glass is not strictly ana iwower town Wharves, landing places, stores, houses and a reservoir to supply the locks were added to Bytown.
