Mary's Hospital in memory of Sarah Harris 300,000 turn out for gay parade in San Francisco SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) An estimated people turned out under sunny skies Sunday for a Lesbian-Gay Freedom Day Parade where festival-style entertainment with banners flying from city hall was mixed with a strong political punch. Parade organizers urged the crowd to come together again July 15 in a massive march for gay rights on the eve of the Democratic National Convention at San Francisco's Moscone Centre. "It's a national march for all of our rights," said Pat Norman. "Be there." The rally at Civic Centre Plaza featured speakers on stage set up on the city hall steps, where the parade of 200 units, led by Dykes on Bikes, culminated following a mile march from the downtown Ferry Building. Police, who blocked off streets and had uniformed officers and a helicopter monitoring the extravaganza of elaborately costumed participants, said the parade and rally was "peaceful" with only minor problems reported.

California Assemblyman Art Agnos of San Francisco drew a rousing ovation at the rally when he said he would reintroduce AB1, a bill prohibiting sexual discrimination in employment which was passed by the Democratic state legislature and vetoed by Republican Gov. George. Deukmejian. "We will be back with AB1 next year and the year after that and the year after that until it becomes the law of the land," Agnos "We too have a claim to a right to work a claim to a right to justice a claim to a right to love," Agnos said. A bisexual group, saying they have been left out of gay-lesbian community events, called for a "bi-brunch-time rally" at Moscone Centre prior to the gay rights parade July 15, the day before the' Democratic National Convention.

Another group announced a "People's Convention" in Oakland July 13-16 to show a "grassroots movement" for electing officials sympathetic to gay causes. Other groups at the Freedom Day rally included Nuclear Freeze proponents, the Committee for Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, a gay fathers organization, church representatives and a prostitutes union. "It's a wonderful day to feed our pride and our joy of being lesbian women and gay men," Linda Boyd, a lesbian mother and parade organizer, told the crowd. Another organizer, Ken Jones, said the homosexual community estimated to be one-fourth of the city's 705,000 population must "begin to challenge the nature of things," such as alleged police sweeps through the city's gay sections.
